Chris Cruz-Boone’s faculty leadership project supported the Bakersfield College Adult Education program to establish a community partnership with Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) Parent University. The BC/ BCSD Parent University planning team met weekly for more than five months in the Spring of 2022, and was overseen by Bakersfield College Director of Academic Support Services Diona Doss and Bill Moseley, Interim Vice President of Innovation and Development.

What is Parent University?

Each academic year,  the largest unified elementary district in the state of California, Bakersfield City School District offers weekend all-day instruction to self-selected parents to improve learning and family relationships, called Parent University.

How was the KCCD leadership project involved?

The goal of this KCCD project was to identify an adult population for recruitment and enrollment at Bakersfield College. The team worked to complete an outreach plan that at each phase considered many BCSD caregivers are English Language Learners and others struggle with written correspondences.  The team created a script and produced a commercial to be shared at their Saturday Parent University Meetings in combination with an adult education interest survey (provided in both English and Spanish).

In immediate response to the commercial, more than 250 BCSD parents indicated they would like to take part in the inaugural BCSD Parent University/ Bakersfield College Adult Education partnership and begin their college journey in the 2022/2023 academic year. The BCSD/ BC team worked to draft follow-up correspondences, reach out to each elementary school with interested parents, and table at BCSD events to notify these future Renegades of their pending registration events.
